Edward Grieg died one hundred years ago in 1907 and even in his lifetime was celebrated as the master of Norwegian national music. Between 1874 and 1876 he composed incidental music for compatriot and contemporary Henrik Ibsen’s drama Peer Gynt which he later arranged into two suites. These compositions perfectly reflect the richness of the dramatic action and are also a superb summation of Grieg’s musical character depictions. Jean Sibelius, the great Finnish composer, died fifty years ago. ...He composed his Violin Concerto in D minor in 1903. That year, it was premiered in Berlin by the ten year old Hungarian violin prodigy, Ferenc Vecsey, to whom the work is dedicated. Two years later, Sibelius revised his only concerto and this version was premiered with Richard Strauss conducting. Felix Mendelssohn, the master of early German romanticism, died one hundred and sixty years ago and expressed a duality between southern and northern lands in his work. The “southern” works include the “Italian” symphony, while the north is symbolised by the Hebrides Overture and the Scottish Symphony. He spent nearly a decade pondering this latter piece and only put it down on paper in 1841–42. It is dedicated to Queen Victoria.
