Featuring: Csaba Onczay – cello Conductor: Martin Turnovský Rachmaninov: The Isle of the Dead – symphonic poem Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1 in E flat major, op. 107 Janáček: Taras Bulba – orchestral rhapsody Serge Rachmaninov composed one of his most important works in 1909, based on a painting of the same name by the Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin, which the composer had first seen two years earlier in a black and white reproduction. “If I hadn’t first seen it in black and white, ...I would never have written Isle of the Dead”, said the composer. The work, according to one critic, makes the listener “see Dante’s Hell and the teeth grinding tortures of Purgatory”. Dmitri Shostakovich composed his first cello concerto in 1959 for Mstislav Rostropovich. It can be regarded as a musical portrait of the age and a social mirror. We find in it the impressions of individual and social pain, existential misery, war and Stalinist oppression, as well as the commitment to fight these things. The great Czech composer Leoš Janáček wrote his three part orchestral rhapsody, based on Gogol’s prose epic, in 1918. The composer uses dramatically brilliant, expressive and highly colourful music to depict the “bloodily realistic” 15th century story of the heroic Cossacks that derives from a Ukrainian chronicle.
