It is hardly surprising that the presence of an Italian conductor should call for the inclusion of Italian masterpieces on the programme. Paolo Paroni, already a frequent guest in Croatia, Slovenia and Bulgaria, will be arriving at Müpa bearing a list of compositions that are, with the sole exception of Mozart's Piano Concerto in D major, picked from nearly two centuries of his homeland's musical output but seldom heard in Hungarian concert halls. Similar in terms of genre and conceived al...most simultaneously, Alfredo Casella referred to his work of programme music entitled Italia (1909) as a rhapsody for orchestra, while Resphigi's symphonic poem, Fountains of Rome (1916), is celebrated as one of the greatest achievements of musical impressionism. Both composers were members of the so-called Generazione dell'Ottanta, a grouping of composers born in the 1880s who, striving to open up Italian music to the latest trends, successfully led it into the mainstream of European modernism.
