All the works to be played at this concert provide a key role for the trumpet in particular, and for the brass section in general. Despite the fact that the musical literature is not exactly brimming with trumpet concertos, a number of major composers (including Telemann, Vivaldi, Hummel and Mozart) did nevertheless compose works in this genre during the Baroque and Classical periods. Joseph Haydn's 1796 Trumpet Concerto in E-flat major is unique in that it was written for a special instru...ment, a keyed trumpet furnished with tone holes to make it suitable for playing the entire chromatic scale.
Anton Bruckner set his final completed work for full orchestra apart from other works first and foremost by its scale and the size of the orchestra required to play it. His Symphony No. 8 is monumental even by Brucknerian standards. At nearly 90-minutes, it challenges an enormous orchestra with a large wind section with the task of giving expression to the composer's grim vision. Much more relaxed in tone is Richard Strauss's miniature piece for trumpets, trombones, horns, tubas and tympani, which, as the title suggests, was written for a special occasion: the Vienna Philharmonic's first ball in 1924.
