It can happen that the first critic of a piece of music gets it seriously wrong. On initially hearing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, Nikolai Rubinstein, one of the most renowned musicians of his day, described the work as worthless, unplayable and vulgar, advising the composer to preserve only a few passages while throwing away the rest and starting again. Fortunately, Tchaikovsky’s belief in himself was such that the work was premièred without changes, albeit not in Moscow as he had origin...ally intended, but in the United States. The concerto became an immediate success and remains one of the composer’s most frequently performed works to this day. The early critics who claimed that Sibelius’s Symphony No. 1 imitated or parodied Tchaikovsky may also have been wrong. Presumably Sibelius was infuriated at the comparison not only out of pride as a composer but also because Finland was then under the yoke of Russian oppression. Even this youthful work already uses the distinctive poetic language characteristic of the composer, in which nature – the snowy landscape, the sky, the pine-trees and the wind – are subtly, sensitively and expressively evoked, in the Finnish manner.
