Buxtehude: Prelude in D major, BuxWV 139 Buxtehude: Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott, BuxWV 199 J. S. Bach: Trio Sonata in C major, BWV 529 J. S. Bach: Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582 César Franck: Chorale in A minor Messiaen: L’Ascension – selection Belgium’s most famous organist invites music lovers on an exciting journey. Bernard Foccroulle was born in Liège in 1953, a distinction he shares with one of the greatest of all organ composers César Franck. He has made over thirty... CDs on the most beautifully sounding historic organs featuring all the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Dietrich Buxtehude. He also performed the latter composer’s works in a concert series in both Brussels and Paris. He is also active on the contemporary music scene and participated in world premières and recordings of composers such as Luciano Berio, György Ligeti and his own former teacher Xavier Darasse. Besides performing he has taught at the Liège Conservatoire, from 1992 until 2007 he was director of the distinguished Brussels opera house, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and in 2006 was appointed director of the Aix-en-Provence Festival. As a composer he has written a number of organ works and chamber music pieces. In his Budapest concert, he will be guiding the listener through perhaps the most important monuments of the last three hundred years of organ music. We are afforded a glimpse into German and French organ traditions, as Buxtehude had a determining influence on Bach so was Olivier Messiaen taught on the French school attached to César Franck’s name and evolved his own individual style. In this colourfully assembled programme, Bernard Foccroulle is also marking the one hundredth anniversary of Messiaen’s birth. (For details of the Preface event preceding this concert, see page 79)
