Works by J. S. Bach, Marchand, Seifen, Escaich and improvisations In 1717 in the court of the kingdom of Saxony, an audience who were accustomed to music and spectacle gathered to witness a unique duel. At stake was to decide whether Louis Marchand, the celebrated organist of the Paris Royal Chapel, was the finest in the world, of whether a certain Johann Sebastian Bach, a highly successful organist in the German protestant churches was deserving of the title. The competition came to a rather p...remature end. Marchand arrived confident of victory but when he heard Bach practising he was so astonished that he apologised, turned around and left. The Palace of Arts will stage another duel between a French and German organist in 2009. Both are world famous artists and each possesses perfect techniques and the ability to improvise. Host, musicologist and rector of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music András Batta will explain the rules of the competition.
