Conductor: Tugan Sokhiev Soloist: Sa Chen – piano Supported by the Budapest Institute Française The Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse initially accompanied operas but after 1945, under the directorship of André Cluytens and Georges Prêtre, it developed into a symphonic ensemble. From 1968 to 2003, it was led by Michel Plasson who made the orchestra famous worldwide – and in 1980 they were given permission to use the word “national” in their name. They have made over one hundred rec...ords so far with such world famous singers as Hildegard Behrens, Teresa Berganza, Angela Gheorghiu, Susan Graham, Barbara Hendricks, Jessye Norman, Roberto Alagna, José Carreras, José van Dam, Nicolai Gedda and Thomas Hampson. From the 2005/2006 season, the principal guest conductor of the Toulouse orchestra and its artistic advisor has been the thirty one year old Russian from North Ossetia, Tugan Sokhiev. He emulated the likes of Semion Bitchkov and Valery Gergiev in studying in the legendary class of Illa Musin in St Petersburg and later with Yuri Temirkanov. He graduated in 2001 but achieved international recognition while still a student. Again in 2001 he made his debut at the Mariinsky Theatre and two years later, conducted Tchaikovsky’s Onegin at the New York Metropolitan Opera. Born in 1979, Sa Chen is one of the leading Chinese pianists. She became the first recipient of the Crystal Award at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, and came fourth as the youngest competitor at the Leeds Piano Competition. She now lives in Germany, and according to Emanuel Ax is a truly brilliant pianist who has played, amongst others, several times with Gidon Kremer who invited her also to his festival in Lockenhaus.
