It has become an annual tradition for Endre Hegedűs to present his audience with an evening of orchestral piano music at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, and this is not the pianist’s first collaboration with the Danube Symphony Orchestra and conductor Gergely Ménesi. When putting together the programme for this evening, it was important for Hegedűs to evoke his own personal experiences in connection with the masterpieces concerned. “Mozart’s Rondo for Piano and Orchestra was one of the g...reat experiences of my childhood in the unforgettably beautiful interpretation of Annie Fischer. This elegant and brilliantly sparkling music, which Mozart himself loved so much he would not allow anyone else perform during his lifetime, brightens our hearts. Beethoven’s concerto has also followed me through my musical career as I have played it several times in the finals of piano competitions and have had the chance to perform it in various distant locations across the globe. Japan’s Tower Records recently issued a recording of one of my live performances that included this composition. Grieg’s hugely and deservedly popular piano concerto, with its melodies evoking northern lands that are distant yet still somehow familiar, and with its surprising and magical harmonies, carries a life-affirming message akin to the fresh winds of spring. This concerto recalls for me the warm reception I was given on the occasion of my orchestral début in the United States.” (Endre Hegedűs)
