At the last evening of this year’s chamber music series entitled Open Rehearsal Room, the audience will be treated to works which – with one exception – originate in the 18th century. Although the names of the composers are well known, the works to be heard are not. Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, for example, attained immortality with his Stabat Mater and opera buffa entitled La Serva Padrona, but we would be hard pushed to name even one of his instrumental works. And yet during the 26 years of hi...s life he wrote not only operas but a large number of works in other genres – though it is also true that it is no longer easy to determine which works are genuinely his, and even the authorship of the Flute Concerto in D major is questionable. Although Beethoven’s Sextet in E-flat major carries the opus number 81, it is not a mature work composed at the same time as the sonata Les Adieux, the Choral Fantasy or the incidental music to Egmont, but has its origins some 15 years earlier, having been completed in 1795 when the composer was 25 years old. Carl Maria von Weber, the cousin of Mozart’s wife and composer of the well-known opera Der Freischütz, was also an outstanding composer for the clarinet; however, his Clarinet Quintet from 1815 is rarely performed in concert. The “odd man out” in this evening’s programme is the contemporary Australian composer Ross Edwards, whose unusually orchestrated seven-minute composition bears the title Binyang, which means “bird” in the language of Australia’s Aborigines.
