An interesting selection of music highlighting a variety of faces of the 20th century features Bartók’s trio entitled Contrasts, which was dedicated to the legendary jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman. Schoenberg completed his Chamber Symphony for 15 instruments in 1906, which – as the title indicates – is located on the boundary between chamber music and the symphonic genre. Marking the commemorative year of László Lajtha in 2013, Quatre Hommages also features on the programme, wherein the outstan...ding ethnomusicologist and composer pays tribute to four greats of French music history in four movements. American contemporary composer David Lang wrote his work Lend/Lease for the birthday of the London Sinfonietta, inspired by the mutual aid scheme initiated between the United States and Great Britain during the Second World War. Japan’s Toru Takemitsu, who passed away in 1996, was known for the enigmatic titles of his works, and the one-minute Baroque miniature entitled Cross Hatch, composed in 1982, is no exception. György Ligeti’s son Lukas Ligeti wrote the exciting composition featured here for the German-Cameroonian dancer Bettina Essaka. The work unites two musically distant worlds in the shape of the percussive music of Mali and the keyboard compositions of Domenico Scarlatti, creating a stylistic labyrinth through which the listener is guided by the traditional American folk song Shenandoah.
