Conductor: Domonkos Héja Leopold Mozart, the father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart published a teaching method from which we can learn much about the use of the instrument, music of the time and the traditions of improvisations which now largely died out in Europe. It is a surprise to discover that the performing principals and instrumental techniques can still be found in the practise of living Hungarian folk music, particularly the tradition of Transylvanian village music. The remarkable link ...to this exciting mystery is possibly that in the local noble palaces, contemporary European music could regularly be heard. The musical fashions of the time and the leading musicians reached the manor estates of Hungary and Transylvania, thanks to major events at which all the local village musicians would also perform. This helped bolster two styles of playing methods which at the time were not so distant from one another. Perhaps for this reason, Hungarian folk music has preserved the musical customs of Mozart’s era. So it makes hearing Mozart works alongside Transylvanian instrumental folk music all the more exciting. A highlight will be the performance of one of Mozart’s divertimentos which a village has preserved almost note for note, by classical and folk musicians, and also in a combined performance.
