Conductor: Domonkos Héja Bartók: Hungarian Pictures Levente Gyöngyösi: Verkündigung Dohnányi: Symphony No. 1 in D minor, op. 9 Founded by Domonkos Héja in 1993 and sponsored since 2007 by the Budapest 3rd district (Óbuda) local government, this superb ensemble has chosen to perform two rarely heard works. In the middle of the concert is Gyöngyösi Levente’s Verkündigung (“Annunciation”), which was inspired by five verses from Rainer Maria Rilke. The composer calls it “orchestral songs without... words”. This commissioned work was not only a big success at the orchestra’s ten year jubilee concert at the Budapest Academy of Music but a year later in 2004 was heard in leading concert halls in Germany, Wiesbaden, Leipzig, Berlin and Munich. Ernő Dohnányi wrote his Symphony No. 1 while only twenty-three. He began composing it during a concert tour of America but completed it in Gmunden, Europe. Its world première in Manchester in 1902 was conducted by the great Hans Richter. It was first preformed in Hungary a year later. “Dohnányi’s symphony sounded splendid. He conducted it himself. We greatly celebrated it”, wrote the young Béla Bartók who a little later played it on the piano at Emma Gruber’s house from memory. His own series Hungarian Pictures unlike the other two works on the programme, is well known and popular. In 1931 he orchestrated five of his piano works from 1908 to 1911. It contains such classic folk inspired Bartók music as Night at the Székelys, Bear Dance and Swineheard’s Dance from Ürög.
