The world famous conductor, Christoph von Dohnányi and one of Germany’s finest ensembles, will first play György Ligeti’s now classic work for large orchestra, Lontano, which has lost none of its novelty and freshness over the past four decades. Perhaps this will help us find something quite new in Felix Mendelssohn’s popular violin concerto. Complicit in this discovery will be the soloist, the world famous Russian Vadim Repin who has only just emerged from being a “young Titan”. And speaking... of Titans, we conclude with a true test of the orchestra, Gustav Mahler’s Titan Symphony which will round off this first class concert.
