Saint-Saëns: Allegro molto, Capriccio, Scherzo Dupré: Ballade, op. 30 César Franck: Prelude, Fugue and Variation Liszt: Rákóczi March J. S. Bach: Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582 Improvisation on the C minor passacaglia theme Variation on Autumn Leaves Joint improvisation on themes chosen by the audience In the first half of the concert, we will hear original works by French Romantic composers written for the rare combination of organ and piano. László Fassang, who won the Inter...pretation Grand Prix of the prestigious Chartres competition, and the supreme pianist Ilona Prunyi will bring to life works that were all in different ways looking for new means of expression in late 19th and early 20th century Paris. Camille Saint-Saëns, César Franck and Marcel Dupré as organists of churches in Paris, all wrote some truly French creations. Franz Liszt originally wrote his Rákóczi March for two pianos, but the version for organ and piano is a true curiosity: it has only once ever been played in Hungary, and that was at the inauguration concert for the organ at the Palace of Arts. We could almost call the second half of the concert “improvisations à la carte”. László Fassang is improvisation professor at the San Sebastian Music College in Spain, while Béla Szakcsi Lakatos is a legendary figure in Hungarian jazz, and in 2006 they both stepped onto the podium of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall for the Prima Primissima Prize. In the middle of applause, they resolved that they should next meet again in the same place for a concert. We will now find out how Bach’s famous passacaglia theme will sound played by Szakcsi, and what the Joseph Kosma, Johnny Mercer and Jacque Prévert evergreen Autumn Leaves is like from the hands of the classically trained Fassang. At the end of the evening, these two supreme improvisers will make music together from themes given to them by the audience – from Mozart to Gershwin. And why is the concert called Nine Manuals? That is the surprise!
