The more than one hundred and fifty years of unbroken impetus of the New York Philharmonic is further proven, to the joy of Hungarian audiences, with the ensemble and conductor Lorin Maazel giving two quite different programmes on consecutive nights in Budapest. The second concert begins with an overture, which its composer, Antonín Dvořák, originally intended as the middle piece of a triad of such works called Nature-Life–Love. The world premiere of the Carnival Overture was in Prague at the co...mposer’s farewell concert before his voyage to America, in April 1892. Dvořák’s great mentor, Johannes Brahms completed his now hugely popular violin concert fifteen years earlier and was the result of his close relationship with one of the great violinists of his day, József Joachim. With its wide scale of emotions, the work uncovers some dazzling beauty for the listener and performer with almost every bar. Tonight’s soloist will be the twenty three year old Julia Fischer, who has already won three top French recording prizes for her Bach album. Today she performs all over the world, teaches and holds master classes. Born in Germany, she currently plays a 1750 Guadagnini violin. Igor Stravinsky composed his opera based on Andersen’s tale at the request of the leader of the Ballet Rousse, Diaghilev. In 1917 he reworked the material into a symphonic poem. It was premiered two years later by the great Swiss conductor Ernest Ansermet and the Suisse Romande Orchestra. Diaghilev also commissioned Maurice Ravel’s ballet Daphnis et Chloé which the composer also converted into two orchestral suites a few years later. Perhaps the second suite is now the more popular. Completed in 1912, the work is brimming with unique orchestration ideas and is highly suggestive through its colour effects.
