He composed Candide one year before what would become his most famous work, 1957's West Side Story. Fellow American George Gershwin was commissioned to write Rhapsody in Blue by bandleader Paul Whiteman. The composition for piano and jazz band premièred in New York in 1924. Gustav Holst is one of the greatest figures in 20th century English music and his best-known piece is the symphonic suite Th...e Planets.
