The Palace of Arts has been staging a New Year's concert since 2008. Each year, Haydn's wonderful oratorio, first performed in 1798, is played to mark the occasion. "The Creation is something we need," writes András Batta of the piece, "we desire that someone shows us the beauty of the world once again, and imbues in us the feeling that it is good to live on this earth." This is why The Creation is a timeless anthem for the new beginning. The first New Year's Concert also celebrated Hungary's ac...cession to the Schengen Zone – the dawn of a spirit of brotherhood similar to that so cherished by Beethoven. The returning master of the New Year's concert is Ádám Fischer, a man who knows Haydn's music inside and out. Each year, he invites a different orchestra to play this iconic masterpiece of European music. On previous occasions, he has conducted the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, each time supported by outstanding choirs and soloists. In 2011, he will be conducting the orchestra that is perhaps closest to Beethoven's spirit of brotherhood. Founded in 1981, the 50-strong Chamber Orchestra of Europe comprises musicians from each of the old continent's 15 countries – and is without an artistic director. In the past, Claudio Abbado and Nikolaus Harnoncourt have spent a great deal of time with the orchestra and played a key role in building the image the orchestra enjoys today. Its members are both leading soloists in some of Europe's top orchestras and professors in its top musical institutions – a selection of performers that guarantees memorable concerts wherever the orchestra plays in Europe, or even the world.
