After the immense success of last year’s performance of Verdi’s Requiem (which brought 450 young singers from all over Hungary together) in 2007 “the country will sing again” in an event organised by the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok and the Budapest Academic Choral Society. Johannes Brahms compiled the German text of his work himself, from various parts of the Bible, from the psalms, gospels, letters of the apostles, the book of prophets and even from some apocryphal Biblical texts. The requiem... is cast in seven movements and it tells of deep faith in which weeping and the pain of death alternate with consolation and belief in eternal life. The general human validity of the work, its humanism that transcends denominations is given by the final line which is taken from the book of Revelation: “They will rest from their labours for their deeds will follow them”. In other words, his work and deeds will make man immortal.
