For this special concert, the National Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Michael Stern, the son of the late violinist Isaac Stern and one of the most highly regarded American conductors in his own right. As a kind of musical calling card, the music director of the Kansas City Symphony will begin by conducting a work by the composer who invited him to perform with the New York Philharmonic at the tender age of 27. Leonard Bernstein wrote his characteristically brilliant, austere but rom...antic Oscar-nominated music for On the Waterfront. The film about the machinations of the mobs ruling the New York and New Jersey docklands premièred in 1954 with Marlon Brando in the starring role. A Czech composer with Romanian roots, Bohuslav Martinů wrote his Symphony No. 4 – together with five other symphonies – after emigrating to the United States to escape the Nazi occupation of Paris. Along with Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Bartók, he is customarily cited as a composer who blended the musical traditions of Eastern Europe with those of Western Europe, creating a new musical language and distinctive style. One of the first emblematic examples of this endeavour was Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, which bore the subtitle Pictures of Pagan Russia. The ballet and concert piece sparked one of the greatest scandals in music history at its première in 1913, as admirers of the music’s rhythmic complexity, brilliant orchestration, tonality, energy and lyricism scuffled with members of the Parisian audience accustomed to more noble themes, who were outraged at the work’s raw, barbarian tone and harsh dissonances. The audacity of the piece remains striking to this day.
