The second concert in a two-part “mini-series” within this season, following the first evening on 18 October, again pairs a concerto featuring an internationally renowned soloist with a mass by Franz Schubert, on this occasion the Mass in E-flat major. As with his final works – for example, the “Great” Symphony in C major or the song cycle Winter Journey (Winterreise) – the Austrian composer would not live to hear this mass performed since it was completed in the summer of 1828, but only premièr...ed posthumously the following autumn. It is Schubert’s longest mass, and at the same time the work in this genre that requires the greatest number of performers. The Gloria and Credo movements contain impressive fugues, while the work’s polyphony and richness in orchestration is most apparent in the final movement. In the Agnus Dei, it is also interesting to note that the four-voice main theme is identical to that of one of Schubert’s last songs, Der Doppelgänger. Assuming the dual role of soloist and conductor for the evening is Christian Zacharias, who embarked on his conducting career with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande at the relatively advanced age of 42. Across the Atlantic, he made his début with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2000, and in the same year was appointed artistic director of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra. As a pianist, he burst onto the music scene with victory at the Geneva Competition at the age of 19, followed by further wins in the Van Cliburn Piano Competition in 1973 and the Ravel Competition in Paris two years later. On this occasion, he will play Mozart’s last piano concerto, which was performed by the composer himself at its première in March 1791: documents show that this was Mozart’s final public performance before the onset of the illness that was to take his life.
