The world famous violinist Vadim Repin takes to the stage with the National Philharmonic in this concert as soloist in the Violin Concerto by Johannes Brahms. He began his life as a child prodigy: at the age of eleven he won the Wienawksi competition and when he was fifteen, gave a recital in the Carnegie Hall. He is now regarded as one of the leading violinists of our day. Brahms’s popular concerto is framed by a work each by Joseph Haydn and Sergei Rachmaninov. The Clock Symphony, which is ...one of Haydn’s last, obtains its nickname from the brief bassoon and pizzicato string section in the second movement that creates the illusion of a ticking clock. Rachmaninov’s work The Bells, which was one of his few choral works, was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem of the same title. This is a rare choral work of him in which the choir is accompanied by an orchestra. Each of its four movements concentrates on one aspect and feeling in human life: birth, marriage, fear and death.
