Featuring: Dezső Ránki – piano, and artists from the Budapest Puppet Theatre Conductor: Zoltán Kocsis Tchaikovsky: The Tempest, op. post. 76 Bartók: Piano Concerto No. 1 Stravinsky: Petrushka – with puppets This concert has many delights in store. When two of the leading figures of the great generation of Hungarian pianists, Zoltán Kocsis and Dezső Ránki get together, it is always a sensation. Kocsis, who is regarded as one of the leading world interpreters of Béla Bartók as both pianist ...and conductor, now conducts the Piano Concerto No. 1 with Ránki as soloist. For the performance of Stravinsky’s Petrushka, the National Philharmonic will descend to the orchestra pit, having handed over the stage to the artists of the Budapest Puppet Theatre, who are given the opportunity to perform their choreographies – which they have presented successfully for years – to live music. This production is just the latest involving the orchestra and the theatre: earlier in September 2005, they gave a performance of Bartók’s The Wooden Prince which was later broadcast on television to the delight of countless others.
