Ravel’s affinity for Spanish melodies and rhythms is well known, and attributable to the composer’s half-Spanish lineage. Composed in 1907, the Rapsodie espagnole is one of the earliest examples of his distinctive method of writing for orchestra, of which the translucent weaving together of parts, powerful sonority and sharp accentuation were the main elements. Ravel wrote two piano concertos, the first of which he finished in 1931. The composer himself described the work as “...a concerto in th...e strictest sense of the word, which I wrote in the spirit of the piano concertos of Mozart and Saint-Saëns. In my opinion, the music of a concerto can be happy and sparkling, and need not necessarily strive for depth and dramatic effects... From a certain point of view, my concerto is related to my sonata for violin, while also containing a number of elements borrowed from jazz, albeit within limits!" The second half of the concert will feature not only the spirit of Saint-Saëns but also his music. The composer dedicated his Symphony in C minor, written in 1886, to the memory of his recently deceased friend Franz Liszt. The orchestral scoring of the two-movement symphony also includes the organ, and the work thus became popularly known as the Organ Symphony. The evening’s concert will feature two internationally known young soloists in the shape of pianist József Balog and organist László Fassang. Presented by: MR Music Groups
