Following a hiatus of several years, Tamás Vásáry, lifelong honorary head of artistic direction at the MR Symphony Orchestra, returns to the podium to lead the orchestra through three works by Ferenc Liszt. The celebrated composer was initially inspired to write the symphonic poem Tasso by the Goethe drama, but the final version was also heavily influenced by a Byron poem on the 16th century poet Torquato Tasso. “Tasso loved and suffered at Ferrara, he was avenged at Rome, and even today lives i...n the popular songs of Venice,“ Liszt wrote in the preface to the piece. He was referring to the key motif of his work, La Gerusalemme liberata (Jerusalem Delivered), which he had heard sung by the gondoliers of Venice on several occasions. The Liszt Piano Concerto to be performed will be chosen by the winner of the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition. On 31 August 1856, Esztergom, to the north of Budapest was the venue for the world première of Liszt's first major ecclesiastical work. Liszt himself conducted the Missa Solemnis at the consecration of the Esztergom Basilica. The piece was a milestone in the history of 19th century church music and was regarded as one of Liszt's finest creations even by the composer himself. Presented by: MR Music Groups
