In 1973, the Radio Orchestra presented András Szőllősy’s Trasfigurazioni, a composition for full orchestra which prompted music critic György Kroó to brand the composer a poet following the work’s première. “For me, his music always speaks in verse, beautiful and sad poetry,” he wrote. “It does not shout, and it does not attract attention.” Dedicated to the Radio Orchestra, the piece created quite a stir both at home and abroad and is still considered one of Szőllősy’s greatest works. The orches...tral effect evoking the sound of tolling bells that closes the work would later become a hallmark of the composer’s style. The symphonic cantata by Rachmaninoff to be heard here, completed and premièred exactly 100 years ago, also speaks in verse – a poem of Edgar Allan Poe in Russian translation to be precise– and evokes the sound of bells. In this large-scale work for solo singers, choir and orchestra, the composer undertook no lesser task than to guide the listener throughout the mystery of life, from birth through love to death. Psalmodic verse provided the inspiration for one of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century in the form of Stravinsky’s Symphony of Psalms. The climax to the work – the coda written for the bewitching combination of harp, piano and timpani – is without doubt one of the most magical evocations of bells in the musical repertoire. Eric Walter White described it as “one of the most striking passages in all Stravinsky’s music. The basic ideas are simple but original, and the harmonisation so rich [...] A Byzantine basilica would seem to be the ideal setting for this music, as it floats slowly upwards towards the figure of the Pantocrator dimly discernible at the apex of the dome.” Presented by: MR Music Groups
