The two works on this programme are linked by the tragedies of Elsa and Judit, two amorous women. The fundamental problem is the same in both works. The male lead characters have a deeply hidden secret, which their wives wish to discover by all means. Protestations and threats are all in vain, neither woman will give up and they ask time and again. Their curiosity leads to their love and themselves being hurtled into the ultimate solitude. The MR Symphonics have been one of the leading players o...f the Wagner in Budapest Festival. They now play an extract from Wagner’s Lohengrin, and then the one-act opera Prince Bluebeard’s Castle by Béla Bartók, after whom the concert hall is named.
