Brahms could not have known that the theme of the Haydn Variations was not by Haydn but one of his pupils, Ignaz Pleyel. The theme is a traditional chorale melody, which is sung in processions in Austria dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. Brahms’s Schicksalslied is based on a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin while Brahms set Schiller’s Nanie to music following the death of painter Anselm Feuerbach, but in all likelihood he also wished to commemorate the composer Hermann Goetz who died sadly young. ... Throughout his career, Benjamin Britten was committed to writing works for children. His Welcome Ode was for youngsters and it was performed at the Queen’s jubilee celebrations in 1977. The interesting feature of the Psalm 150 is that the composer does not prescribe the performing apparatus exactly: any instrument or instrumental combination can be used in a given register. In 1945, the British Education Ministry commissioned Britten to compose music for an educational film, which aimed to teach children about the instruments of the orchestra. The music for this film subsequently became a concert hall favourite as The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra: Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Purcell. The work opens with a theme taken from the rondo movement of Purcell’s Abdelazar Suite in its original version, played by the whole orchestra, then by the four instrumental sections in turn. Then each instrument plays its own version. Britten with his inexhaustible imagination adjusts the theme to show off the expressive ability of each individual instrument.
