Conductor: László Kovács Featuring: Ildikó Cserna, Zsolt Derecskei, Mihály Kálmándi – singers, MR Choir and Children’s Choir (choirmasters: Kálmán Strausz, Gabriella Thész) György Orbán: Missa Quarta Carl Orff: Carmina Burana The MR Symphonics (formerly Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) was created following an initiative by Ernő Dohnányi in 1943. Since then, they have given innumerable Hungarian and international concerts and recorded the full scale of the symphonic and oratorio reper...toire for radio. To this day, the orchestra is one of the roving ambassadors for Hungarian music, having visited four continents and played in close to fifty countries. Since 2006 the orchestra’s music director has been Adam Fischer, while its first conductor since 2004 is László Kovács. The orchestra frequently performs oratorio compositions with its two sister ensembles, the MR Choir and Children’s Choir. This remarkable facility and their commitment to contemporary music are united in this programme which juxtaposes sacred and secular works. In the first half, we shall hear György Orbán’s Missa Quarta which dates from 1991. This mass has a powerful rhythmic impetus and the percussion plays a leading role and as always with Orbán, its music is not remotely dogmatic: it is full-bodied music. “I had to solve a strange challenge, combining liturgical calm with secular rhythms” – confessed Orbán. Carl Orff’s scenic cantata was premiered in Frankfurt in 1937 and has enjoyed immense popularity ever since. With its exciting musical barbarism Carmina Burana follows in the footsteps of Stravinsky. It is based around a set of vulgar Latin poems found in the 19th century at the Benediktbeuren monastery, a collection of often bawdy student songs, imbued with a true carpe diem spirit, which moralise, joke and talk of unstable fortune and passing love.
