Over the centuries, the celebration of the Saviour’s birth has taken the widest variety of forms in the tradition of Christian churches, folk customs and art alike. Christmas has proven a particularly exciting time from a musical point of view as the last millennium has seen the modes of expression of religious practice, naïve folk custom and high art mutually complement each other to form a harmonic whole. Ottorino Respighi’s “pastoral” from 1928–1930 and Benjamin Britten’s 1942 work A Ceremony... of Carols are beautiful and moving examples of this threefold tradition, and of the abundant source of inspiration both mediaeval music and poetry represent for 20th century music. The Te Deum is one of Christianity’s most ancient hymns of praise, long an indispensable part of the mass at major celebrations that has inspired a whole host of musical settings to its beautiful text. Versions of the Te Deum were written by Lully, Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Berlioz and Dvořák, and in the 20th century by Kodály, Britten, Penderecki and Arvo Pärt. One of the most beautiful and uplifting of all these is Anton Bruckner‘s composition from 1884, a work at once sombre and unfettered, sublime and lyrically contemplative, whose closed symphonic structure conceals limitless vistas. The same closed but infinite nature characterises the scherzos of Bruckner’s symphonies, in which traditional formal and melodic elements – traceable even to Mozart and Schubert – become components of an unusual vision. These are rare musical treats. Presented by: Hungarian Radio Music Groups
