Conductor: Adam Fischer Choirmaster: Kálmán Strausz Fetauring: Annamária Kovács, Attila Fekete – vocal Gesualdo: Madrigals Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde This time Adam Fischer again presents a truly unique programme. The question has to be asked: what connects the madrigals of the Italian prince Carlo Gesualdo da Venosa, who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries to one of Gustav Mahler’s final masterpieces, completed in 1908 and premièred in the year of his death, 1911? The common denomi...nator is that both composers worked under the continuous “awareness of death” (Bruno Walter). Gesualdo’s daring, chromatic and expressive style was way ahead of his contemporaries and it is this that links it to Mahler’s remarkable farewell music to life. Das Lied von der Erde is an orchestral song cycle in six movements for tenor and alto soloists with large orchestra. Mahler had a superstitious fear about writing a ninth symphony, not least because Beethoven, Schubert and Bruckner all died having reached this number. So despite it being symphonic in scale and composed immediately after the Eighth Symphony, he elected not to give it a number, which is why it is now known simply as Das Lied von der Erde. (Mahler went on to complete a Ninth Symphony and sketched the greater part of the Tenth before death finally caught up with him.) The work sets Chinese poems which Mahler knew from creative translations by Hans Bethge in a publication titled The Chinese Flute. Each setting contains an example of pentatonic writing but Mahler does not generally strive to write exotic music. He chose these poems (to which he sometimes adds his own lines) because they perfectly expressed his thoughts and feelings, perched as he was between the 19th and 20th centuries, at the border of two musical eras.
