Ever since its foundation, a key goal of the Mini Festival has been to preserve the rich traditions of contemporary Hungarian choral music. For years, the festival programme has featured a concert comprising exclusively 20th century and contemporary choral works. This year, we are invited to hear compositions from six artists performed by the MR Choir, Hungary's leading choral group. Conductor of the choir since 2009, Csaba Somos will lead the troupe through works from six composers, some of whi...ch are world premiers. Among these is a piece of music completed by Erzsébet Szőnyi in 2008. This joyful little composition was inspired by poems using words typically heard at the start of a dance. A further premier is a work by Miklós Kocsár, another leading figure in contemporary Hungarian choral music. A professor at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, Miklós Mohay won the Benedek Istvánffy prize in 2001 for a composition entered in the Petőfi Society competition in 1996. Ember voltam ("I Was A Man") by Jenő Pertis, who died in 2007, was written in 1981, making it the oldest piece to be heard. Lőrinc Szabó's Hungarian translation of Catallus's famous epitaph was the primary source of inspiration for Zsófia Tallér, who regularly works with a number of well known theatre and film directors. She also added other poems from the same Roman poet to her work, which was commissioned by the Debrecen Kodály Choir and premièred at the Béla Bartók International Choir Festival in 2004. The youngest artist to have her work included on the programme is Tímea Dragony. Presented by the Hungarian Musical Society and the Palace of Arts
