"On his first day in Salzburg, a man will become a little crazed. By the second day, he is out of his mind and, from the third, he cannot be distinguished from the Salzburgers," Mozart once wrote of the city of his birth. Despite this, Salzburg continues to profit from his cult with the brisk sale of Mozartkugel and other tired souvenirs. Yet, the questions remain: Who exactly was Mozart? And what was he really like? Why was this eternally childlike, vulnerable prodigy buried in an unmarked grav...e like a beggar? How was he really affected by the endless greed of his tyrannical father? Among the biggest sensations of 2008 at the Palace of Arts were Xaver Varnus's two-part performances of Bach's works. The world famous organist now presents Mozart's life in two concerts, the first focusing on the period until his father's death, the second on what was left of his life afterwards – with Mozart's outstanding music telling its own story.
