Conductor: László Kovács Featuring: Károly Mocsári – piano Glinka: Ruslan and Ludmilla – overture Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, op. 18 György Orbán: Veronese Sketches Stravinsky: The Firebird – suite (1919) The Miskolc Symphony Orchestra has been one of the most active players in music life in Northern Hungary. Since 2006, the orchestra has been giving concerts in its new hall at the House of Arts and is also resident at the Miskolc International Opera Festival. The mus...icians also appear regularly in Budapest and have extensive relationships abroad. Each year, it releases a CD on the Hungaroton label. Since 1984, the orchestra has been directed by László Kovács whose broad musical interests means the orchestra is comfortable in lighter genres as well such as jazz and has been the host of the third KLAZZ Festival in 2007 appearing with various jazz formations. For the opening concert of the 2008 festival of Hungarian symphony orchestras, the Hungarian Symphonic Panorama the orchestra has elected to play popular works: emblematic compositions of Russian music frame their programme. The evening’s soloist is Károly Mocsári who is Hungarian born but has been living in Paris for almost two centuries. He has given recitals in over thirty countries and his partners have included such splendid musicians as Barbara Hendricks, Yuri Bashmet, Andrew Davis and Mstislav Rostropovich. As always with the Hungarian Symphonic Panorama, each concert will feature a work by a contemporary Hungarian composer. György Orbán is one of the composers committed to making his message as digestible as possible and for it to be enjoyed by a wider audience.
