This concert presents three rightly popular works from three of the great composers of European classical music. During his long life, Richard Strauss (1864–1949) saw a plethora of new styles and tendencies come and go, while he himself endeavoured to remain faithful to his own musical native tongue of romanticism. He composed his famous symphonic poems while still young towards the end of the 19th century. One of the first of these tells the story of the famous Spanish adventurer and womaniser ...Don Juan. Strauss was interested less in the story, however, and more so in the richly contradictory character of its main protagonist. Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943), who was not only a composer but a famed pianist in his own right, composed three concertos for the piano, of which the Concerto No. 2 in C minor is the most famous. It is a work characterised by flowing melodies and fiery passions. Of the nine symphonies by Beethoven (1770–1827), the fifth deals with the most difficult struggle of man against his fate, a struggle in which the composer stood as living proof of man’s ability to emerge victorious. The soloist for this evening’s concerto is the young Chinese pianist Xiayin Wang, who began her studies in Shanghai before completing them in the United States at the famous Manhattan School of Music. She can already boast many fine successes on the concert stage. The conductor Irwin Hoffman is well known to audiences at MÁV concerts having guested many times for the orchestra in recent years. Despite being in his 88th year, he remains at the peak of his powers and is an enormously popular figure among both season ticket holders and orchestra members. Presented by: MÁV Symphony Orchestra
