The Bartók-Pásztory Award-winning MÁV Symphony Orchestra has been running concert seasons ever since the Palace of Arts first opened its doors. The successful Master Season Ticket series is named after the orchestra's founding conductor Tibor Szőke. It has developed into a traditional for the series to be opened by an outstanding Hungarian vocal artist. In previous years, the orchestra's special guests have included Erika Miklósa, Gyöngyi Lukács and Andrea Rost. On this occasion, the MÁV Symphon...y orchestra will be accompanied by Bernadett Wiedemann, an outstanding vocal talent from the Hungarian State Opera. The singer regularly and delights in playing Verdi's dramatic mezzo roles and the alto heroines of Wagner's operas, while her domestic and international appearances in recent years have included alto solos from numerous oratorios and masses. She has guested in just about every European country, as well as in Japan and Brazil, singing alongside big-name artists such as László Polgár, Yevgeny Nesterenko and José Carreras. Her work has been exalted by conductors Yuri Simonov, Pier Giorgio Morandi, Rico Saccani and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro and been recognised in a string of awards: She received the Juventus Award in 1999, the Mihály Székely Memorial Plaque in 2000 and the Liszt Award in 2006. The conductor for the evening is the multi-faceted musician Gergely Kesselyák, a name associated with the foundation of the opera faculty at the Miskolc National Theatre and the “Bartók +” International Opera Festival. He also conducts for the Hungarian State Opera and occupies the position of artistic director at the Szeged Open-air Festival. He was appointed conductor of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra in September 2010. In addition to conducting, he has also directed several major productions over the years.
