This is not the first time Brazilian conductor Rodrigo de Carvalho has surprised audiences with unique programmes reflecting both his broad musical knowledge and conscious effort to follow one piece of music with another exploring similar or contrasting themes for maximum musical impact. This concert features a selection of works exclusively from French composers, each of them short and very different, as an hors d'oeuvre for one of the last century's finest works. Eric Satie (1866-1925) is amon...g the first and most remarkable figures in new French music and was the spiritual leader of “Les Six”, a group of artists that included Darius Milhaud. Satie's Gymnopédies series of compositions for piano were written in 1888 and betray nostalgia for Ancient Greece. Its surprising new harmonies were so effective in their time that Debussy himself reworked them for the orchestra several years later. A Boat on the Ocean is a reworking of one of Ravel's early piano pieces and is a fine example of how composers in the age of impressionism were irresistibly drawn to water. This same attraction inspired Debussy's three epic symphonic works, the three exquisite movements of Le mer. Between the pieces of music by Satie and Ravel, the audience will hear Milhaud's Cello Concerto No. 1. Written in 1934, the work reflects the airy sentimentality and slightly frivolous atmosphere of inter-war Paris. Winner of the 2004 International Pablo Casals Cello Competition, László Fenyő has played solo roles for the MÁV Symphony Orchestra on many previous occasions and will take the audience through this fascinating selection of French music.
