There are not many performers as at home in German choral music as Matthias Goerne, born in Weimar in 1967. What is more, the baritone's unique style unites several types of artist, for he is at once a concert artist, an opera singer and an exponent of Lieder. His past performances have demonstrated that he is comfortable with the music of Schubert, Wagner and Bach, while he is unsurpassed in the title role of Alban Berg's Wozzeck and as Papageno in The Magic Flute, the songs of Beethoven, Hugo ...Wolf and Mahler, and Mendelssohn's oratorios. He learned from the best, as it was Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the two great German singers of the 20th century, who passed on their secrets. Anyone who has heard Goerne in concert on the rare occasions he has performed in Budapest will know how difficult it is to put the excellence of his art into words. Goerne regularly works with outstanding pianists Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Leif Ove Andsnes, Alfred Brendel, Christoph Eschenbach and Elisabeth Leonskaya. In collaboration with the largest independent record label, he has recorded a series of Schubert Lieder with a different piano accompaniment on each of the 11 discs. The Johann Sebastian Bach arias featuring strongly in his repertoire will be performed with an orchestra formed in 1984 from students recruited at several music colleges throughout Switzerland. The Basel Chamber Orchestra is also known for performing regularly with the world's finest soloists from Bartoli to Zehetmair, winning several prestigious awards. Presented by: Palace of Arts
