Formed in 1904, the London Symphony Orchestra is regarded as one of the finest in the world. It has visited the Palace of Arts twice before: in 2005 with Sir John Eliot Gardiner and in 2007 with its current president Sir Colin Davis whom Valery Gergiev succeeded as principal conductor. He was born in Moscow to Ossetian parents and made his reputation as artistic director of the Kirov Opera (Mariinsky Theatre) where he earned plaudits for his work with compositions by Russian composers. He made h...is opera debut conducting Prokofiev’s War and Peace when he was twenty-five and initially became known internationally for his operatic work although now he conducts as many symphony concerts as operas. Sir Georg Solti, who founded the World Orchestra for Peace nominated Gergiev as his successor and he visited the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall in 2007 with the ensemble. This season, he has led the London Symphony Orchestra in a number of thematic concert series. One of these looked at Russian composers forced into exile. Although the Classical Symphony by Sergei Prokofiev was written before the 1917 revolution, and in Russia, shortly after its première, the composer set off abroad to try his luck overseas. As did Sergei Rachmaninov who returned to America where he completed his last work, Symphonic Dances in 1940. Igor Stravinsky also conducted the première of his Three Movement Symphony in America to where he arrived by ship three weeks before the outbreak of World War II.
