Featuring: Mitsuko Uchida – piano Conductor: Sir Colin Davis Mozart: La Clemenza di Tito – overture, K. 621 Mozart: Piano Concerto in C major, K. 415 Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, op. 36 The London Symphony Orchestra is over one hundred years old and one of the world’s best symphony orchestras. Their repertoire consists of the masterpieces of the past three centuries but also the finest new works, many of which the orchestra commissioned. The London Symphony Orchestra was th...e first British orchestra to tour abroad when it visited Paris in 1906 and has since toured the world. (Curiously, the orchestra enjoyed a residency at the Florida International Festival years before establishing a home in their native London.) These days, they undertake twelve tours a year, making them one of the busiest orchestras in Europe. Their activities go beyond concert hall appearances: they have created an intensive educational programme, operate their own record company which has won Gramophone, Grammy and Classical Brit Prizes, but they can also be heard in the cinema providing the sound track for Star Wars 3 – The Revenge of the Siths, and Harry Potter. Sir Colin Davis has been chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra since 1995. Now seventy, he shows no signs of slowing down. In 2007, he is recording Beethoven’s Fidelio and the Missa Solemnis, will travel to conduct leading American and European orchestras, as well as operas worldwide. He is handing over his post of music director to Valeri Gergiev on January 1st, but will remain president of the ensemble. Mitsuko Uchida made her reputation primarily as an interpreter of Mozart and Schubert. However, her repertoire also includes works by Berg, Webern and Boulez and her recording of Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto, made with Pierre Boulez and the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, has won the Gramophone Prize and three other awards. She is a resident artist with the Cleveland ensemble but also works regularly with other distinguished orchestras. Besides performing, she is a co-director, together with Richard Goode, of the Marlboro Music Festival.
