This concert revives the Mini Festival tradition of inviting a nation to contribute to the programme. This year, it is the turn of Great Britain's most prominent contemporary composers to be performed alongside works from their Hungarian counterparts. These works can neither be categorised as chamber music, nor as orchestral pieces. Instead, they are what are known as ensemble compositions for chamber groups and will be performed by one of Britain's top contemporary music groups. London Sinfonie...tta was formed in 1968 and has commissioned more than 200 pieces of music from artists such as Harrison Birtwistle, Iannis Xenakis, Luciano Berio and Steve Reich, as well as the British composers to be heard this evening. The first work to be performed will be the 1970 Chamber Concerto by György Ligeti, who sadly died in 2006. This will be followed by a Tansy Davies composition written for a chamber septet and performed for the first time in 2004 and a performance of Máté Bella's prize-winning composition in the chamber music category at the first New Hungarian Music Forum. In 2010, the 26-year-old also won the Benedek Istványffy award for composers aged under 40. Following the interval, the audience will hear a piece of music composed in 1982 by George Benjamin, born in 1960 and one of Olivier Messiaen's favourite students. Another of Benjamin's pieces was played at the Proms series a year earlier in 1981, writing the composer's name into the history books as the youngest ever to be featured at the iconic concert series. The popularity of Thomas Adès, another composer yet to reach his 40th birthday, belies those that question the relevance of contemporary music. Presented by the Palace of Arts
