Gerd Albrecht was born in the German city of Essen in 1935. After briefly teaching in Stuttgart and Mainz, he was appointed Germany's youngest musical director in Lübeck aged just 27. He quickly rose to prominence, taking on the roles first of principle conductor of the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, then of musical director at Zurich's world-famous Tonhalle Orchestra. Albrecht regularly appears at the world's major opera houses and festivals, chief among them the Vienna Staatsoper and the Salzburg Fe...stival. From 1988 until 1997, he worked at the Hamburg Opera House as principle conductor, while also serving from 1991 to 1996 as the first foreigner ever to be appointed musical director of the prestigious Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
