Efforts to stage Ferenc Liszt's monumental oratorio are not without historical precedent. Gusztáv Oláh made one such attempt in Budapest in 1938, prompting reviewer Dezső Szomory to write, “I am convinced that with his romantic nature and love of grandiose beauty and earthly angels, Liszt Ferenc would have admired and enjoyed this spectacular flood of colour and light. This lavish and amazing triumph of staging and power is a dizzyingly magical experience in which an artist has reimagined the dr...eams of another to perhaps even greater artistic effect.” The Csokonai Theatre took on the challenge of putting on a visual show to bring even more from Liszt's powerful oratorio. "Our aim is to ensure that, from the moment they step through the gates of the theatre, the audience escapes everyday life and enters a unified ritual space and can enter fully into the spirit of the musical work."
