“Années de pélerinage – Years of Pilgrimage. This is the title of Ferenc Liszt's piano cycle in three parts but is a phrase that could even serve as an epithet for the life and art of the composer himself. His eternal pilgrimage within himself was what transported him from his youth as a virtuoso to the grandiose works of his more mature years and the simplified yet highly enigmatic philosophy of his old age. Alongside his popular piano works, the 2011 Liszt Festival celebrating the bicentenary... of the great composer's birth will feature a broad selection of his less well known and unusually atmospheric chamber pieces, as well as the songs that breathed new life into the work of the great poets of the 19th century. In addition to Liszt himself, we will also marvel at the genius of the performers and composers of his day, particularly Paganini and Chopin, both of whom had a profound influence on Liszt. Liszt's work also opened doors for major figures of musical history, such as Saint-Saëns, Bartók and Busoni, to develop their own styles. By performing their work here in concert – with a work or two from the master himself – we hope to demonstrate Liszt's striking influence.” Dénes Várjon, Artistic Director Presented by: Hungarofest Nkft.
