Besides his interpretations of Schubert and Hugo Wolf, as well as exploring the American lieder repertoire, he is also currently one of the great interpreters of Gustav Mahler’s songs. Leonard Bernstein played a decisive role in this but Hampson has recorded Mahler’s songs with not just Bernstein but also with Luciano Berio, Simon Rattle and Klaus Tennstedt. Born in America, he studied with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and then in 1980 came to Europe where he worked with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Jean-Pierre Ponnelle. The critics have praised his versatility since besides lieder, opera and oratorio, he is also at home in operetta and musicals. As the president of the Hampsong Foundation, he also undertakes pedagogical and musicological research; he embarked on a twelve concert tour with pianist Wolfram Rieger in which he sang the finest pieces of American lieder composition. The German pianist is Thomas Hampson’s regular partner. He studied at the Munich Music College and attended master classes by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Hans Hotter. In 1991 he launched his own Lied class for singers and pianists, while in 1998 he was appointed professor at the Berlin Hanns Eisler Music College. Besides Thomas Hampson, he has worked with such towering vocalists as Juliane Banse, Barbara Bonney, Brigitte Fassbaender, Olaf Bär, Matthias Goerne, Christoph Prégardien, Thomas Quasthoff, Peter Schreier and Michael Schade.
