Almost exactly two years after Edita Gruberová appeared at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall – also with the Slovak Philharmonic – in the title role of Bellini's Norma, the Hungarian audience is invited to witness what promises to be yet another outstanding performance. Often referred to as the Queen of Coloratura, Gruberová is not only unusual in her longevity – her career now spans 40 years – but also in her recent conquest and popularisation of music not usually found in the global concer...t repertoire. Although she has sung all the major operatic roles from Mozart to Richard Strauss, generally led by world-famous conductors, Gruberová is primarily regarded as a leading performer of the opera seria roles of Donizetti and Bellini. Her name is also associated with the final five Bellini operas and Gaetano Donizetti's trilogy of Three Queens of the Tudor dynasty, as well as the rediscovery of Maria Stuarda, Anna Bolena and Roberto Devereux. First performed at Milan's La Scala in 1833, Lucrezia Borgia is loosely based on the story of the famous Renaissance-era femme fatale. The libretto was written by Felice Romani based on the Victor Hugo stage play. The role demands an almost constant presence on stage from the lead so it is little wonder that few performers are willing to take on this role in concert performance. Presented by: Palace of Arts
