A recipient of the Kossuth Prize in 2014, Kristóf Baráti has in recent years become one of the most popular and busiest figures in Hungarian music. His devilish virtuosity, broad repertoire and extreme capacity for work have allowed him to record the solo sonatas of Bach and Ysaÿe, all of Beethoven's sonatas for violin and piano, and Paganini's two violin concertos. There is no more difficult or risky challenge for an artist than to stand on stage with a single instrument without acco...mpaniment, but Baráti is in his element in this environment - and it in is this role that he appears for the opening piece of the programme. It is perhaps a greater honour even than the Kossuth Prize that world-famous artists have accepted his invitation to perform a selection of classical and unusual chamber music.
Of Armenian descent, the American Kim Kashkashian is among the world's top viola players. This is not an empty claim, but a fact. In addition to solo works, her other main specialisation is chamber music, and her recordings have gifted her listeners some of the most beautiful moments of music. Another member of the global musical elite, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet boasts an equally impressive discography. He has recorded all of Debussy's piano works, the complete cannon of Haydn sonatas, the music of Prokofiev and Bartók's piano concertos. Born in 1985, István Várdai may be six years younger than his Baráti, but is conquering the stages of Hungary and the world with the same intensity as his friend, with whom he regularly plays together.
