International Music Day at the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall brings together outstanding personalities from two generations of musicians to play three masterpieces of classical chamber music literature. The Kossuth Prize-winning young musician who lends his name to the Kelemen Quartet has had close ties to the Palace of Arts ever since it opened. He participated in the institution's inaugural concert in 2005 and has wowed audiences with his outstanding talent on countless occasions wit...h his remarkable talent as a soloist. He founded his string quartet in 2010 with his wife, Katalin Kokas, his student from the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy, Gábor Homoki, and his sister-in-law, Dórá Kokas. In only its second year, the Quartet won both second prize and the audience award at the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, before landing first prize two months later at the Beijing International Music Competition. The foursome has also toured the American continent with great success and been invited to perform as resident quartet by Gidon Kremer at his own festival in Switzerland. The quartet has played at many prestigious venues, such as the Berliner Philharmonie and London's Wigmore Hall, and is embarking on several-week concert tours to Australia and China in 2014.
Double Kossuth Prize-winning musician Miklós Perényi is the chamber partner of the Kelemen Quartet on a permanent basis. He has been a defining figure in Hungarian concert culture ever since he performed before a full house in the Great Hall of the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy as a nine-year-old boy in short trousers. To him, work represents neither a profession nor work, but an urge that comes from deep within, while playing an instrument is a form of expression as natural as speech.
