Founded in 1961 and conducted by András Deák since 1991, the Danube Symphony Orchestra will perform two popular works from the defining figure of the Russian romantic period – and a composer who heavily influenced the 20th century music of Debussy and Stravinsky. The Mussorgsky double bill will be split by a world première of a work by Levente Gyöngyösi, a young and prolific contemporary Hungarian composer. His Piano Concerto will be performed by József Balog, 2001 winner of the Bartók-Liszt Int...ernational Piano Competition. The Mussorgsky piece opening the concert harks back to the ancient pagan ceremony that traditionally took place atop Bald Mountain in midsummer, or rather St John’s Eve. “The witches used to gather on this mountain, gossip, play tricks and await Satan their chief,” the composer wrote, setting the scene for the piece. The second part of the evening celebrates a work that began as a piano cycle but became one of the most frequently played pieces in the orchestral repertoire thanks to an exquisite Maurice Ravel arrangement. The ten movements of Pictures at an Exhibition represent musical reflections on a retrospective exhibition of the work of Mussorgsky's friend Victor Hartmann that featured more than 400 paintings. The music describes the paintings – with their iron-nosed dolls, ancient castles, children playing in the gardens of Les Tuileries in Paris, quarrelsome old women selling their wares on the street or haunted catacombs – so clearly that listeners can almost see the images appear before their eyes.
