Joyce Yang came to international prominence in 2005 when as the youngest participant she came second in the Van Cliburn Piano Competition, which is held every four years. The jury also adjudged her the finest chamber music and contemporary music performer at the event. Besides the twenty thousand dollar prize, she also won the opportunity to make a record plus some concert invitations. In November 2006 she made her debut with the New York Philharmonic with conductor Lorin Maazel at the Avery Fis...her Hall, before setting off on a concert tour to Korea. Born in South Korea in 1986, Joyce Yang was taught piano by her aunt, shortly after receiving a piano for her fourth birthday. At the age of ten, she entered the Seoul Music Academy and soon began to attract attention in competitions. She has lived in the United States since the age of eleven where she attended the Juilliard School of Music’s class of outstanding talent. (She was taught there by Yoheved Kaplinsky whose own teacher at the Tel-Aviv Music Academy was the former Bartók pupil Ilona Vincze-Kraus.) She performed several times with the Philadelphia Orchestra and with the school orchestra under Leonard Slatkin. Since then she has been highly active giving concerts. She relatively rarely visits Europe, so her performance at the Palace of Arts is a notable event.
